HURRICANE HOME READY / PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Hurricane power-outage and generator planning

Prepare for outages and organize questions for an appropriately qualified backup-power professional.

Plan around essential needs

List medication refrigeration, communications, lighting and medical equipment. Discuss backup needs with healthcare and electrical professionals where appropriate.

Portable generators require outdoor placement

Never use a generator in a home, garage or other enclosed space. CDC guidance places portable generators outdoors more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents. Keep working carbon monoxide detectors.

  • Use the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Do not connect a generator through a wall outlet.
  • Have appropriate transfer equipment and fixed electrical work handled by qualified professionals.

Prepare a consultation brief

Share essential loads, existing equipment, fuel and placement constraints. This planner does not size a generator or approve electrical work.
